Negotiating Sexuality

After rewatching Twilight it was made obvious by the articles that the Director and the author of Twilight have intentionally constructed sexuality in a Mormon fashion. The characters in Twilight may seem like a semi-normal group of high schoolers, but in reality there is little sexual interaction occurring. Bella and Edward barely touch and they start dating. It seems like the sexuality in Twilight becomes so easy to talk about between mothers and daughters is because there is only to wanting of a sexual relationship, because Edward would kill Bella with his strength. Sex becomes forbidden because of the consequences that it would have upon Bella. It represents a value of abstinence that many mothers would like to believe is going on in their daughters life. I think that the mother-daughter relationship is complicated because it aggressively favors abstinence. While the interest in sex is apparent it doesn’t advocate for other practices of safe sex. I’m not sure if it makes it easier or harder for the mothers to talk to their daughters about sex and still gives sex a stigma. Regardless, I think that talking about sex with ones mother while in high school would still be painfully awkward for both parties.
